Master back control: hooks, control mechanics, submissions, and maintaining back position.
Back control is one of the most dominant positions. You're behind, opponent can't see you, and you control their movement. Back control mastery means maintaining the position and executing reliable submissions.
Contents
Hook Mechanics
- Inside Hooks: Feet inside thighs. Maximum control, prevents shrimping and bridge escapes.
- Outside Hooks: Feet outside. Easier to maintain initially but offers less control.
- Two-on-One Hook Control: Both feet hooked on same leg. Extreme control for finishing submissions.
Back Control Submissions
- Rear-Naked Choke: Classic. Secure seatbelt grip, lock hands, sink hips, pull down on chin.
- Bow and Arrow Choke: Use collar and pants grip. Excellent against strong grapplers.
- Arm Triangle from Back: Control arm with your arm, choke with pressure.
Preventing Back Escape
Opponent will try to shrimp (hip escape). Prevent with tight hooks, high hip pressure. Keep your weight centered on their back. Don't let them get to their side.
Maintaining Back Position
Don't rush to finish. Maintain the position, wear them down, let their panic create submission opportunities. Time is your ally from back control.
