High Crotch Takedown: Setup & Finishing
β°Contents
High crotch takedown mechanics β setup from clinch, lifting mechanics, double leg conversion, trips, and finishing positions.
The high crotch is a control-based takedown that emphasizes grip and lifting mechanics over explosive leg drive. It's highly technical and effective at upper belt levels in BJJ competition.
High Crotch vs Double Leg
The high crotch uses a hand inside the opponent's thigh and controls the head/neck, then lifts explosively. Unlike the double leg which drives legs, the high crotch relies on upper body control and lifting mechanics. It's slower to execute but harder to counter once committed.
Establishing High Crotch
- Start from collar tie position with head control
- Grip one arm around the opponent's waist
- Thread your other arm between their legs (the "crotch" grip)
- Cup the inside thigh with your hand
- Maintain neck control with your first arm
- Lift explosively by extending your hips and legs
Lifting Mechanics
The key to the high crotch is the lift. Rather than driving your legs forward like a double leg, you're lifting the opponent by extending your hips and legs upward. This requires significant core strength and balance.
Finishing Options
Double Leg Conversion
After lifting, drop to both knees for a double leg finish. Control both legs and drive forward into side control.
Trip Finish
While maintaining the high crotch grip, use your leg on the same side as the crotch grip to trip the standing leg.
Knee on Belly
Transition to knee on belly by driving your knee into the opponent's abdomen as you finish the takedown.
High Crotch Defense
The primary defense is preventing the crotch grip. Keep your legs together and avoid having your thigh exposed. Once the grip is established, sprawling and creating distance makes the lift much harder.
