The Three Off-Balancing Directions
- Forward (to knees): Pull collar + break posture forward. Sets up hip bump, guillotine.
- Sideways: Push/pull with sleeve + off-balance to the left or right. Sets up scissor, lasso sweeps.
- Backward (over the head): Both feet on hips, push up. Sets up overhead, flower sweep.
Core Sweep Inventory
| Sweep | Guard | Off-balance Direction |
|---|---|---|
| Scissor sweep | Closed | Sideways |
| Hip bump sweep | Closed | Forward |
| Elevator sweep | Butterfly | Sideways |
| Overhead sweep | Closed / spider | Backward over head |
| Old school sweep | Half guard | Sideways (underhook) |
| Flower sweep | Closed | Sideways + push leg |
Sweep Timing Tips
- Sweep in the direction of the top player's weight β never against it.
- The best moment to sweep is immediately after they post a hand (less base).
- Combine attack threats: threaten a submission first, then sweep when they defend.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a sweep in BJJ?
A sweep is a technique where the guard player reverses the position to end up on top. Sweeps score 2 points in IBJJF competition when the reversal is achieved.
What makes a sweep work?
Off-balancing is the key. You must break the top player's base first, then use the sweep mechanism. A sweep attempted without first disrupting their balance will almost always fail.
What is the easiest sweep in BJJ?
The scissor sweep from closed guard is often the first sweep taught β it uses a collar-and-sleeve grip, kicks one leg out and scissor-kicks to reverse the position.
