Duck Under Takedown: BJJ Wrestling Guide
β°Contents
Duck under takedown system for BJJ β setup from collar tie, execution mechanics, back take finish, and counters to the duck under.
The duck under is an elegant wrestling takedown that uses leverage and level change to get behind the opponent without a leg shot. It is particularly effective in BJJ because it leads directly to back control β one of the highest-value positions.
Duck Under Mechanics
The duck under works by creating an underhook on one side, then ducking your head under their arm while pivoting to emerge behind them. Speed and commitment are essential.
Setup from Collar Tie
The most common duck under entry uses a collar tie (back of neck grip) to control their head while creating the underhook opportunity.
- Establish collar tie (one hand on back of their neck)
- Use collar tie to create a level change reaction
- Drop level and underhook their arm
- Duck your head under their arm, pivoting around
- Emerge behind them in back position
From Underhook Battle
In an underhook battle, create a brief moment of elevation in their arm (by yanking upward), then immediately duck under before they can return to the battle position.
Finishing to Back Control
Once behind, transition immediately to seat belt grip: one arm over their shoulder, one arm under their other arm, hands clasping on their chest. Hook with your legs for back control.
Common Mistakes
- Ducking too slowly β gives them time to sprawl
- Not pivoting all the way behind them
- Letting go of the underhook during the duck
- Stopping once you reach their side instead of full back
Duck Under Counters
Counter the duck under with a whizzer (overhook their underhooking arm), sprawl back, and hip into them. Alternatively, a front headlock or guillotine choke catches them as they duck.
